On Saturday, sixteen of our intrepid team will be pulling on their hiking boots and setting out to climb the highest free standing peak in the world; Mount Kilimanjaro. This incredible feat is to raise funds for Julia’s House, a fabulous charity here in Bournemouth who provide care, help and support for children with terminal illnesses.
The team have been bravely following a gruelling training routine, which included a 70 km 5 day hike, followed by a night hike of 15km, and many hours acclimatising on an altitude simulator. Each of the team have aimed to raise £500 – £1000 in sponsorship, which will go some way to helping Julia’s House raise the £2.6million they need this year to keep doing their great work.
The team expect to be climbing for eight days, but Mount Kilimanjaro is a notoriously dangerous mountain. There are extremes of climate at the summit, and lions roaming the lower slopes. Rising to 6000 metres tall, altitude sickness is the biggest danger, and can even kill. They can expect vomiting, dizziness and headaches, and the higher they go, the slower their pace will have to become. The training however, should have prepared them – perhaps not for the lions, but at least for the altitude sickness.
Mourad Malki from the Richmond Group said: “Climbing Kilimanjaro is something fun, exciting, and challenging, and there are no better companions than the Richmond Group employees, including James Benamor our CEO. There was never any doubt that we would be doing this climb for Julia’s House, it offers more than just a place for the children to play, and it’s a place of development, fun, education, respite and release. The support doesn’t just end with the children; it stems to the mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and the staff. We understand how important every penny raised is to them.”
Needless to say, we’re all very proud of them. You can check on their progress by following our tweets or coming back to the site.
